Frequently Asked Questions - STEMS

What is STEMS?

STEMS stands for Student Tuition Examination Management System

STEMS is the LPAB’s student portal where all LPAB applicants and existing students can manage their student journey.

Through STEMS you will be able to:

  • register as a student-at-law
  • enrol for subjects
  • pay fees
  • submit questions and applications to both the LPAB and LEC
  • view and download your unofficial transcript and
  • update your personal details.
I am trying to sign up but the passcode is not working, how do I make it work?

Try adding the passcode with keystrokes (typing the password out), rather than copy and paste.

If issues persist please send an email to lpab@justice.nsw.gov.au with a screenshot of the issue.

I have entered my personal details correctly but I am getting an email that my details are unable to be validated. Why is this happening?

To maintain security the details you insert must match exactly to the details the LPAB has on file.

As the previous system did not have a middle name field, this data was included in the first name field. Please try including your middle name in the 'Legal first name' field and do not include anything in the 'Middle name' field.

Once users have signed up for STEMS, you can initiate a name change request from the “miscellaneous” tile on the STEMS welcome page.

If issues persist please send an email to lpab@justice.nsw.gov.au. Please attach the verification failure email you received so we can identify the data issue.

I am already a student, why am I being asked to pay the $330 registration fee again?

If you are a returning student you should have selected yes to the question  'are you an existing student registered with LPAB' and are not required to registration fee.

Student accounts that selected 'no' in error will need to be deleted before account activation can proceed.

If you have started a registration case as a new student in error email  lpab@justice.nsw.gov.au with 'Reg-Delete' in the subject heading.

I have added my entry category documents, why is it not letting me proceed?

The STEMS system will only allow you to proceed if you have uploaded “Entry Category documents”. Please do not upload your “Entry category documents” as “Academic documents:

1. In the drop-down menu, ensure “Entry category document” remains the selected option.

2. The ‘Entry category document/s’ you upload here must be different to (or named differently to) the academic documents such as transcripts you previously uploaded in the process. The system does not allow you to upload the same document twice.

The system is not able to validate my identification documents, what can I do?

Please note, the DVS only recognises documents that are registered with an Australian Government agency.

New Students

Answer NO to the action: Provide your consent to verify your details through online identity check.  You will then be able to upload your documents for manual review.

If you have failed DVS you cannot go any further with your application.  Go to the home screen and start a new Registration.  Make sure you select NO to online identity check.

Returning Students

Please email us with your registration case ID and copies of your 100 points of identification. We can manually verify the documents on your behalf.
